Charles Worden Bethell (1899-1951)
Charles Worden Bethell was born in 1899 in Denver, Colorado but grew up in Southern
California. Educated in local schools it was not until his discharge from military service
in 1918 that he decided to pursue a career in art, enrolling at the Newman Art Institute
in New Jersey. After graduation, he put his artistic skills to use designing theatrical sets
for the movie industry in Hollywood. He designed sets for stars including Douglas
Fairbanks, Jr. among others. His off-and-on stage commissions allowed him the
freedom, about every three months, to take off on sketching jaunts. About 1930, he
decided to leave stage work to concentrate on landscape painting. Working directly from
nature, he sketched sites throughout the western U.S. including in California, Arizona
and New Mexico, as well as in Mexico. While he painted a variety of themes, he had a
particular fondness for portraying the desert. He was honored with many one-man
shows including at Hatfield (1925), Barker Brothers, LA (1928), Stendahl, LA (1930),
Contemporary Club, Redlands (1930), Little Studio Art Gallery, Alhambra (1930), a
traveling exhibit through Southern California (1933), Arrowhead Hot Springs (1933),
San Bernardino County Art Association (1934), Whittier Art Association (1934),
California Palace of the Legion of Honor and Courvoisier Gallery, both in San Francisco
(1935), Desert Inn, Palm Springs (1947) and at the Laguna Beach Art Association as
well as various state fairs. Bethel died in Redlands, California in 1951.
