Willem Hendricks, Jr. (Dutch, 1888-1966)
Willem Hendriks Jr. was born in the Netherlands between Brussels and Antwerp, the
son of the Dutch artist Willem Hendriks, Sr. His father’s work was more typical of earlier
work by other Dutch painters of the 19th century, yet sometimes the works of the two
Hendriks are confused. Hendriks, Jr. painted primarily in the new style of the day,
Impressionism. His subjects are much more idealized than realistic. He is especially
known for painting landscapes of trees in the woods with cows feeding in a sun filled
meadow, always next to a stream. Occasionally, he would place a small cottage in the
background, and sometimes person in the garden. His pieces are instantly
recognizable, and nearly always the same subject manner. Hendriks Jr. was a prolific
and popular artist in his day. Many of his works survive today, not only in the
Netherlands but also in England and the United States.
