Cornelis Koppenol (Dutch 1865-1946)
Cornelis Koppenol was born in Zoetermeer, Netherlands in 1865. His artistic talent was
discovered during his youth when he was employed in Delft as an ornamental artist at
De Porceleyne Fles (The Porcelain Jar), the Netherlands’ most famous Delft factory. He
was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague where he was a student of J.P.
Koelman and A. van den Berg among others. He himself served on the faculty at the
Royal Academy for many years. A multitalented painter, illustrator and graphic artist,
Koppenol’s surviving works include landscapes, farm interiors, seascapes, portraits and
historic building renditions. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. His
work is represented today in numerous museums including the Rijksmuseum Otterlo
and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. He died in The Hague in 1946.
