Alexander Dzigurski (1911-1995)
A well-known and prolific California seascape painter, Alexander Dzigurski was born in
Backa, Yugoslavia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The son of a wheat
farmer, he studied at the Belgrade School of Art and then at the Munich Academy of Art
before serving in the Yugoslavian Navy where he became entranced by the sea, its
beauty and undulations. After establishing a studio in Belgrade, he was drafted to return
to the military when Hitler invaded Yugoslavia and narrowly escaped capture, fleeing to
Italy and from there to New York. He painted icons and interiors for several years for the
Eastern Orthodox church before relocating in California where he began to paint in
earnest, particularly along the coastlines of northern California and Oregon. Other works
document his travel to scenic sites across the U. S. including the Great Smokies, Grand
Tetons, Mt. Shasta, the Rockies, Glacier National Park, New England, and other coastal
areas. His paintings can be found in the Franklin Mint Museum of American Art in
Pennsylvania, the Republic Bank of Dallas, The Michigan Bank of Chicago, Illinois, the
Ravenswood Bank of Chicago, Illinois, and at the Caterpillar Tractor Company in
Peoria, Illinois. Having become one of America’s well-known artists, Alexander Dzigurski
died in 1995.
