Cesare Bentivoglio (Italian 1868-1952)
An Impressionist landscape, marine and still life painter, Cesare Bentivoglio was an
Italian artist who was born and died in Genoa. Considering the quantity, quality and
popularity of his work, surprisingly little is known about his life as he evidently shunned
publicity of any kind and did not participate in exhibitions. Some sources state that he
studied with the great Genoese painter Giuseppe Sacheri while others claim he was self-taught.
Bentivoglio’s favorite subjects include sea and port views, rural and mountain
landscapes, the Dolomites, the Ligurian coast, but also glimpses of backcountry, still
lifes, and hunting scenes. His work often presents an aura of solitude amidst the
grandeur of nature as well as charm in its expression of the beauty of nature. While
Bentivoglio’s reasons for not participating in exhibitions and art societies is unknown, it
is clear that enjoyed great popularity among art collectors in Italy and far beyond. Many
of his paintings left Italy, likely carried home by tourists. There is a lively trade in his
pictures to this day.
