Louis L. T. Clesse (Belgian, 1889-1961)
Louis Lieven Clesse was a Belgian Impressionist landscape painter who was born and
died in Ixelles, a municipality within the Brussels-Capital region. He studied at the Art
Academy of Ixelles and proved to be an outstanding student. With advice and
encouragement of great Belgian painter Emile Claus, he made his exhibition debut at
the Brussels Salon of 1907 at the youthful age of 18. In the years that followed, Clesse
forged a reputation as one of Belgium’s finest landscape painters. His art is celebrated
for the artist’s attention to light, color, atmosphere and composition. He continued to be
based in Ixelles, painting frequently in the Zonien forest on the outskirts of Brussels,
until establishing a studio in 1932 in Oudenburg from which he studied the coast, the
port and countryside villages in and around Bruges. Clesse was also a printmaker of
handsome architectural/landscape aquatints and lithographic images. After his death in
1961, he was honored with a retrospective exhibition in 1969 in Oudergem, and another
in 1973 in Brussels. He was a member of the Cercle et Artistique Literary (Cercle
Gaulois), was a member of the purchasing committee of the Museum of Ixelles
(Elsene). His works are represented in museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Ixelles, Reims,
Algiers, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco and Tokyo.
